Schizophrenia

Dr. Wolford has significant experience treating patients with Schizophrenia from his time in both Las Vegas & Bronx, NY psychiatric units. Many Schizophrenia symptoms stem from elevated dopamine levels in the Mesolimbic pathways in the brain and primary treatment targets for this include the Nucleus Accumbens & Striatum.

Dr Wolford is very well-versed in using multiple medications from the traditional First Generations to the newer Second and Third Gen meds. The newer meds are the safest in terms of EPS symptoms ie movement side effects. Additionally, the least potent medications & doses will initially be used in order to prevent unwanted metabolic changes stemming from mitochondrial interference by the medication itself that inevitably leads to weight gain, high cholesterol and diabetes.

In certain cases, long acting medications lasting as long as 1, 2, 3 or even 6 months can be utilized and even administered in the office. Dr. Wolford has treated even the most difficult cases using clozapine and is registered in the REMS system to track all important lab results.

Overall our goal at Las Vegas Psychiatry is to maintain patients at their standard baseline in order to promote their highest possible functioning, prevent decompensations and ultimately avoid hospitalizations.
