We are going to discuss a few caveats of treating men with respect to some important areas in their lives. The elephant in the room with many of the antidepressants is the possibility of sexual side effects, particularly the ones which target serotonin as their primary mechanism of action.

What we will be doing for certain affected and/or concerned individuals, is using 1 of 4 known antidepressants which avoid the side effect altogether. Some of these meds merely modulate the serotonin pathway versus totally blocking it or working in atypical fashion targeting other neurotransmitters, such as dopamine or Norepinephrine as well as alpha pathway activity.

Additionally, medications which increase blood pressure will be avoided as well like Effexor and other SNRI antidepressants so as to reduce cardiac disease risk. Interactions will be looked at to ensure that other medical problems do not arise. Also, in the case of anxiety or PTSD, treatments can be used to lower overall stress levels, improve sleep, and reduce blood pressure known to be elevated.
