ADHD

Attention deficit is a major complaint of many individuals, especially working age adults, compounded by the work-from-home transition recently during the Covid pandemic. During recent years, multiple factors can be responsible for the deficits in productivity, concentration, attention, span, and daily routines and scheduling. And more & more we are bombarded by mobile devices and social media notifications.

Research shows that most individuals age out of ADHD by the time they graduate from high school. In adults, 92% of those with symptoms do not actually have ADHD as the  explanation for symptoms stems from other untreated disorders such as anxiety, depression, bipolar, PTSD, substance use. And keep in mind the aforementioned changing workplace: home vs office.

In the event that a true ADHD is suspected, one will be referred to a specialist for comprehensive testing. For my patients specifically, we will prioritize non-stimulant medications, which are safe in terms of addictive potential as well as avoiding cardiovascular side effects like increased heart rate and hypertension. Adderall and Ritalin will not be used for treatment.

Some cases may require an adjunct medication that is FDA approved in adolescents even like Guanfacine or Clonidine. In some cases, we will get one of the newest medications approved that is as efficacious as Ritalin known as Qelbree per the latest head to head studies.

At Las Vegas Psychiatry we will be prioritizing patient well-being and avoiding controlled medication, which includes both Adderall and Ritalin.
